A Quick Getaway to Ahangama!
On a weekend in March, me, my sister and few of my cousins decided to drive away to Ahangama for a quick getaway.
There is always a saying, last minute plans are the best ones. And yes, this was one of those; we planned closer to the dates and booked and confirmed everything right away.
And this is how we planned:
Location/Accommodation:
Of course, we decided to visit down south. The most common, well-known & everyone's first choice is always Galle & Unawatuna; and we all have been and visited millions of times.
Hence, we decided to move further down the coastline of down south towards Ahangama.
Since we cousins are traveling together, we obviously aren't going to be inside the rooms for the whole weekend. We thought of booking a generally comfortable and safe accommodation. We booked two Deluxe Double Bedroom with Ceagull including breakfast.
The rooms & the bathrooms were clean, comfortable enough and built with modern facilities with air conditioning. Theu had coffee & tea with a kettle, dressing table and well-made comfortable queen size bed.
The atmosphere of the accommodation was peaceful, quiet, within a limited land capacity with a reasonable parking space for maximum 2-4 vehicles, again depending on the vehicle type and the size. We booked our accommodation via Booking.com which personally is my favorite booking method with accommodation booking process and this is definitely not my first time booking via Booking.com App.
Departure Time/Arrival & Duration:
We decided to leave from Colombo around 11 a.m. in the morning and take the Southern Highway; which closely took us 2.5 hours to reach the accommodation with a pit-stop at the service area for a coffee and a snack. We decided to arrive to Ahangama during lunch hour as we planned to head out for lunch after visiting another well-known, insta-pic worthy location, Mirissa Coconut tree hill.
Check-in time was at 1 p.m. and informed our late arrival via Booking.com platform itself.
As our stay was for the weekend only, which is basically 1 day and a half and one night, we wanted to move around as much as we could.
Upon arrival Ahangama, after checking in, we freshened up and headed out for sightseeing and stop for lunch on our way back to the hotel. We wanted to experience the nightlife in Ahangama as well, which will share the location details further.
Sightseeing/Lunch/Night Life:
Within a limited window time we had, we wanted to take the maximum we could. As soon as we checked in and freshened up, we went to visit Mirissa Coconut Tree Hill. It was a 20 Minute drive, basically 17 Kms from the accommodation towards Matara.
- Coconut Tree Hill, Mirissa:
This is a must-see spot whoever plans to visit down south, Mirissa. What makes this place so special is the location in a small uphill, surrounded with Coconut trees delivering the most beautiful and picturesque view from the top. Best times would be to witness the sunrise and the sunset; we reached around late afternoon but either way, it's a view you can never look away. The sound of Indian Ocean was crashing the coast entertaining your eyes with her beauty and moves.
Once you reach the destination and if you drove there, you may need to leave the vehicle in a might tight parking area and walk and climb a bit of a hill to reach the point. Just be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. It only takes 5- 8 minutes for the walk. And while you are up there, don't forget sunscreen.
- Lunch Time:
After spending and enjoying time up in the hill with a breathtaking view; it was time for us to head back and look for a good spot for lunch. We chose Salt Mirissa. It's a well-known and energetic vibe place filled with tourists in majority. It's crowded during the season for sure and during the weekends given it is weekend getaway locals outside of the province. Great vibe with great taste of music, great crowd that mingled well a variety of food and drink choices facing the beach, technically right on the beach.
A considerable variety of food and drinks, prices as for me, it's worth for the quality and the quantity of what we ordered and been served, no regrets for sure.
- Night Out:
Upon our return to our accommodation around 5.30 p.m. we decided to take some rest and for like an hour and to head out for drinks and dinner. Our location was Kai Beach Weligama. Outdoorsy place, with a great night life, unfortunately the night we were there it was not the night; not crowded at all. But it's definitely a place to unwind in the evening with a great crowd, great food and great drinks.
The night we visited, most of the cuisine boutiques were closed and our certain orders were not available. Great pool and have access for surfing boards too as it is closer to the beach and the areas is a known area for surfing; accessible showers for anyone uses the beach.
We left our accommodation around 7.30 p.m. and this time we took a tuk-tuk to get there as we were planning to enjoy few cocktails and us being responsible adults :P we thought of snatching a typical local ride. The staff was attentive, and they tried their best to accommodate and meet our orders with great recommendations. Everything we had was great and a great presentation too.
We returned to our accommodation around midnight after a great night at Kai Beach, the atmosphere really helped.
Next Day Morning/Breakfast:
The breakfast for sufficient; there was a choice of English Breakfast or SriLankan Breakfast. I personally went ahead with English Breakfast with a black coffee. The breakfast for filling along with a freshly cut fruit platter; a complete breakfast indeed. As we wanted to explore Ahangama in the day light and we definitely needed a good walk after our breakfast, we headed out for a quick walk. Felt morning sun in Ahangama into our skin; while walking around we came across this beautiful chic and modern accommodation and thought of stopping by for a Cappuccino. This place is called Surf Station.
Beautiful place, there is a veranda open area right next to the pool and facing the beach, it's just a fence away from the from the beach. Morning ocean breeze with a bright blue sky and a nice cappuccino is the best feeling ever. Definitely going to visit this place on my next visit to Ahangama.
Check-Out & Back Home:
Check-out was a smooth check-out, and it was at noon itself. We headed back to our rooms after a walk, got ready, packed our bags and we headed out to go back home, Colombo. There is a lot more to explore and do experience in Ahangama more what is in here. But for a one day and half weekend getaway, this was a great getaway as we covered few main spots within the timeframe we had, and it definitely kept us occupied.
Sometimes, a perfect getaway is not always about the location, but it comes with a right people around you.
Until next adventure....
Stay Curious & Keep exploring....
